Beach Bungalow

Status: completed 2001

The brief was to create a house that would take best advantage of the breathtaking site and develop an informal, simple, local and contemporary home appropriate to its beach-side setting. Located on a densely inhabited coastal cliff on Cape Town's Atlantic Seaboard, the small site required careful planning to capture the oceanscape, sunsets and world renowned beach setting. The extensive use of timber in the interior and exterior of this home further develops the beach house identity. Large areas of slide-away, floor-to-ceiling glazing allow the house to open and close to suit different seasonal conditions. A series of design devices were deployed to control the environmental performance of the house which include slide-away doors and cross ventilation to allow sea breezes to cool the interior, roll-away blinds to shield the West sun, projecting eaves to shade openings.
