IDASA established the Democracy Centre, a multi- functional venue on the doorstep of parliament. A vibrant urban place to meet, eat, read, learn and debate. The centre included a bookshop, democracy institute, restaurant, conference facility and art gallery. A three-way partnership inhabited a city space set in an historic Sir Herbert Baker building from the early 1900s. The grand crafted interior of the original building provides a backdrop to a brave new South African identity, and the design and art installations gave an old masterpiece a new vital presence.
