Eco house

Location: Kommetjie, Western Cape, South Africa
Status: proposed 2007

A home in harmony with its environment, responds to the harsh Cape Coastal climate so that the owners may enjoy the surroundings in all seasons. Preservation of the large indigenous Milkwood trees is integral to the location of the house, nestled into the coastal thicket. The plan brings together four interior and exterior spaces, each articulated as one of the primary elements: earth, air, fire and water. These form the 'heart of the house'. Detailed site analysis revealed opportunities to use the North orientation and its views over the Atlantic Ocean. Passive design strategies included shading eaves, slide-away screens for seasonal solar control, thermal mass and cross-ventilation, vegetation and wind screens. Available natural resources are recycled. Active systems included solar power and water heating, rain water harvesting, grey water recycling, and materials with low embodied energy.
